Beautiful scenery, fresh air and like-minded individuals all around – it sounds like a great way to spend a weekend. But the hardy souls competing at the VTTA National 12-Hour Championships this Sunday will have another focus.
The roads between Monmouth, Abergavenny and Hereford provide the setting for the Welsh Cycling Association 12-hour, which this year doubles up as the VTTA National Championship.
While the 2024 winners on age-adjusted distance - Malcolm Cox and Kath Smith – are not taking part this time, both silver medallists from last year’s event are returning and hope to go one better.
Peter Tomlin (North Hampshire RC) covered 299.12 miles on age adjusted distance for second spot in the open event last year, and he will face stiff competition, not least from Lee Williams (FTP Fulfil the Potential Race Team) the VTTA National 24-hour champion.
Joanna Cebrat (360 Cycling) covered 279.78 miles on age adjusted distance last year and faces competition in the VTTA event from Mandy Lane (Port Talbot Wheelers).
Other riders to watch for include the evergreen Brian Hygate (Fareham Wheelers), the 87-year-old national age-related record holder who recently completed an impressive 258 miles at the National 24-Hour Championship.
A full report from the event by the National Executive Committee representative will be published shortly after the event, along with photographs too.
