Midlands VTTA Time Trial Report – Contesting the Billy Steer Cup & Bicknell Cup

Midlands 25 mile Championships K41/25  

Eleven Midlands VTTA members lined up to contest the two regional trophies awarded on age?adjusted times (AAT): the Billy Steer Cup for the fastest open rider and the Bicknell Cup for the fastest female rider. With five female riders and six open riders, both competitions were well?supported and genuinely competitive.

Course & Conditions

The event took place on the K41/25, a course that delivered a stern test from the very first mile. Riders faced a strong headwind on the opening section—unfortunately a stretch they would have to tackle three times over the full distance.

After the first roundabout, the field turned onto the familiar K41/10 section. Many of you will know this part well: fast, flowing, and helped on the day by a cross?tailwind over the next six miles. Speeds were high, morale was good… and then things got interesting.

From the roundabout at the far end, riders swung back into a cross?headwind, and the character of the course changed completely. The following seven miles were rolling, exposed, and difficult to pace, demanding careful effort management. Burning too many matches on lap one was a costly mistake, as the wind strengthened noticeably for the second lap and punished anyone who had been over?ambitious early on.

Results – Open Competition

The open event produced a tight finish, with just two seconds separating first and second place on AAT:

• 1st – Simon Dayton (Legato RT) AAT: 51:59 – Winner of the Billy Steer Cup

• 2nd – Joe Murry (Team M.I Racing) AAT: 52:01

A special mention to Simon, who also finished second on actual time, rounding off an excellent ride.

Results – Female Competition

The women’s event was equally competitive, with strong rides across the field:

• 1st – Sue Semple (Legato RT) AAT: 55:34 – Winner of the Bicknell Cup

• 2nd – Leah Cuthbertson (George Fox Cycling Solutions) AAT: 56:25

Both riders handled the changing conditions superbly, with Sue taking a well?earned victory.
