Joanna Brewis and Russ Richardson were victorious at the Northern Closed Circuit Championships, staged at the Croft motor circuit.
Organised by a great team of volunteers from several clubs in the North East, the event was the fifth such event, covering a ten-mile course which was also used for a ‘come and try it’ event alongside the competitive races.
With around 200 bikes in action it was a big success, with medals given to the top three in the main categories which were judged according to the age-adjusted times principle, allowing riders of different ages able to compete against each other.
Zurbaran Racing’s Russ Richardson won the open time trial category, the 68-year-old’s actual time of 22-39 being reduced to an impressive 19-37 on age-adjusted time (AAT).
That gave him the win by 16 seconds over 61-year-old Legato Racing Team rider Simon Horsley, while 43-year-old Marcel Schubert (Zurbaran Racing) was third with 20-05 despite having the fastest actual time of 20-13.
In the women’s time trial category Joanna Brewis (ADDFORM Vive le Velo) clocked 22-43, so the 42-year-old had an AAT of 20-05 which was 48 seconds better than 55-year-old Debbie Moss (Springfield Financial RT), while 67-year-old Paula Fisher (Born to Bike) was third with 22-01 on AAT.
The road bike categories were also keenly contested with John Davidson leading a one-two for Reifen Racing. The 62-year-old’s age adjusted time of 21-44 was 25 seconds better than his 57-year-old team-mate Lee Ridden in 22-09, while South Shields Velo 63-year-old Mark Favers took third.
Gemma Mitchell (FTP Racing) won the women’s road bike event in 22-45, while Deborah Jefferies (Manilla Cycling) was second in 26-05 AAT.
But the biggest success was the come and try it event, which saw 114 riders trying out the track. Hopefully some of those riders caught the bug and will be back in action in a VTTA time trial in the near future!
