A full field of riders lined up for this year’s VTTA National 10-Mile Championship on the fast F11/10 course near Tring, with strong competition expected throughout.
Conditions proved favourable, with dry weather, a light breeze and low pressure helping create a quick course for those chasing top times.
In the women’s event 72-year-old Jen Clegg (Team Bottrill Nopinz) delivered a standout performance, recording the fastest time overall on the day with an age-adjusted 16:41. Her ride also secured a new national age record of 23:40.
Linda Dewhurst (Cheltenham and County CC) took silver with 16:59 and in doing so set a new national age record, while Deb Hutson-Lumb (Legato Racing) claimed bronze in 18:16.
For the second championship in a row the open category produced a rare dead heat for first place, with Chris Lord (Brighton Excelsior CC) and Richard Oakes (Team Ohten) both clocking identical adjusted times of 16:57 to share the title. Meanwhile, Mike Lythgoe (Legato Racing) took third place with 17:08 a new national age record for the 76-year-old.
Team honours in the Club Team competition went to Team Ohten with Richard Oakes, Mike Twelves and Joel Stewart combining for a winning adjusted time of 52:43.
In the Group Team category East Midlands took victory through the efforts of Jen Clegg, Richard Oakes and Mike Twelves, with a combined AAT of 50:52.
The tandem competition highlighted that age is no barrier.
Mary Corbett and Norman Harvey (Sotonia CC), with a combined age of 160, claimed victory by just 49 seconds on adjusted time from Ian Greenstreet and Gwen Kinsey (Newbury Velo CC) finished close behind, but set a new national age record of 19:48 in the process.
The championship event was very well organised by Joy Payne with support from the VTTA London and Home Counties group.
