VETERANS WEEKEND ROUND-UP: The Circuit of Ingleborough provided a stiff early-season test for cyclists of all ages last weekend, with just five seconds separating the top two veterans on age-adjusted times.
Otley CC’s Sam Ward posted a time of 1-02-33 to achieve an age-adjusted performance of 1-01-44 for the 26.2-mile event staged by Pendle Forest CC in North Yorkshire.
The 46-year-old won the category by just five seconds from Craig Battersby (Tactic Sport UK RT) whose actual time was 1-04-14.
Top veteran Debbie Moss (Springfield Racing Team) clocked 1-18-26 for an age-adjusted performance of 1-10-08 on her road bike, while Joanna Cebrat (360cycling) had an age-adjusted time of 1-11-29 from an actual performance on her time trial machine of 1-18-35.
Elsewhere, 72-year-old Christopher Maffei (360cycling) was fastest veteran on age-adjusted time at the Manchester and District TTA 10-mile event. His actual time of 24-34 gave him an age-adjusted time of 20-56, three seconds better than fellow vet Richard Shaw (Seamons CC) who had an actual time of 22-19.
In Kent the VTTA 10-mile event saw Louise Robinson (Shaftesbury CC) come out top by six seconds on age-adjusted time with 20-29, having an actual time of 23-14.
That gave her the win on AAT from Gravesend CC’s Anthony Westwood, with Stephen Wilkinson (VeloRefined Rule 5) third in 20-51 AAT.
And on Sunday, Cleveland Wheelers’ 21-mile event near Stokesley in North Yorkshire saw many strong performances among the veterans categories.
Zurbaran Racing’s Louise Hamilton was victorious in the 55-59 category with a time of 1-01-39 which was fastest female on the day, while Sarah Foulds (AIMS Cycling) clocked 1-08-04 for second.
And in the open categories GTR Return to Life rider Chris Smart was fastest and topped the 45-49 category in a time of 45-56, while Marcel Schubert (Zurbaran Racing) wasn’t far behind in 46-57.
Smart, from Scotland, had powered to third overall the previous day with a time of 20-27 at the Yorkshire CF 10 in North Yorkshire, while Angela Hannon-Flaherty of Seacroft Wheelers was second fastest female in 24-52.
