Competitive Cycling for Life
In the latest edition of the VTTA’s quarterly magazine, The Veteran, evergreen Scottish time trial ace Alex Munro revealed to Tony Farrell how he has continued cycling well into his 90s.
Below is just a teaser of the full article – to read the full interview look in the September edition of time trialling’s premier magazine, The Veteran.
“Alex Munro describes the essential attributes of a racing cyclist as grit, tenacity, ingenuity and, with characteristic humour, a touch of stupidity. It was a fitting introduction to a conversation with the Scottish-born super veteran, now firmly rooted in Lancashire and closely associated with Southport CC.
That observation set the tone for my meeting with Alex, whose Scottish roots and long association with Lancashire cycling provide the backdrop to a remarkable sporting life.
Alex shared a series of stories drawn from 93 years of an unusually varied and engaging life.
What began as a question-and-answer piece about Alex’s cycling achievements soon developed into a broader and more compelling account of his life, family, career and enduring commitment to the sport.
Alex was born in Glasgow into a family with a strong sporting pedigree. His mother was a Scottish swimming champion, his grandfather played for Rangers, and his father played for Aberdeen. Alex speaks with pride about the athletic background that helped shape his lifelong connection with sport.
His earliest cycling memories were formed on a tricycle, racing friends around the neighbourhood and, more often than not, beating them. His first formal race came at the age of 16, in a Douglas CC hill-climb event. Starting as number one, he went on to beat a field of 60 riders.
