On the first Sunday in August we held this year's group 50 champs, hosted by the Cardiff 100 milers' event on R50/1b - two laps of a 25 mile loop between Abergavenny and Mitchel Troy, starting at 8:01am.

The weather was overcast though not chilly, and there wasn't much wind. Some riders enjoyed a light soaking at some point during the event, while others missed out completely. The wind seemed to vary in direction between west and north-west, and was quite light.

Various people, marshals included, said it felt like a float day.

But it wasn't, and several competitors were disappointed to find themselves minutes down on their 50 mile times from a few weeks ago. Others however seemed to have found a luckier patch, though there's no obvious pattern to explain why.

As usual, I blame the fickle wind between Hardwick and Raglan.

As we've become accustomed, lone woman Andrea trashed all the group's men, with Plus 24:52.

Gold medal in the men's event went to Mike Hall, two minutes down on Andrea, with Ian Gibson taking Silver, a further minute and a half back at Plus 21:28. Bronze went to Bob Jones, way down on Plus 15:01.

It's a shame Coronavirus restrictions precluded any mock presentation with dummy medals outside HQ at the end of the event, but if any of the prize-winners would like a real medal by which to remember the occasion, please let me know.
